RESISTANCE REBORN by Rebecca Roanhorse is the prequel story to the movie The Rise of Skywalker, the final installment of the Star Wars Skywalker saga. Picking up nearly right where The Last Jedi ends, we find the Resistance in ruins, left only with a handful of people ready to take on the First Order. This includes Poe, Finn, Rey, Rose, Leia Organa, and Chewbacca. The heroes are faced with the question of what to do next and must travel throughout the galaxy to recruit other leaders so the Resistance can be reborn.
Although written for the adult market, teen readers who are fans of Star Wars and who want to fill in the gaps between movies will enjoy this immensely. Its length and readability are appropriate especially for those high school students who already engage with content from the series.
In a fun way, this book feels like one big family reunion. Personally, as a lifelong fan of Star Wars, I found this to be a wonderful coming together of many characters we’ve met over the years — from various movies, other novels and comics, and even video games.
Despite all these characters, however, Rebecca Roanhorse somehow masterfully handles bringing all the different voices together and making this such a cohesive and emotional adventure. It is among the best Star Wars canon novels and is sure to light the spark of resistance in those who read it, setting the perfect stage for the final chapter of the Skywalker saga. A must-read for Star Wars fans.
