GUTS by Raina Telgemeier

GUTS by Raina Telgemeier is another fantastic entry into the Smile book series and the middle grade graphic novel world.

Inspired by Raina’s childhood and personal experiences, GUTS tells the story of a young Raina’s anxiety, stomach troubles, and fear of being sick – all through the lens of how these things manifest for her at home, school, and with friends. Eventually her parents have her see a therapist to learn how to cope with her anxiety and talk about her fears.

Raina’s illustrations have a comic feel to them, which also do a wonderful job of highlighting young Raina’s anxiety, nervousness, and stomach pains.

This book is a must-read for children who are dealing with their own stomach issues or feelings of anxiety. But, additionally, it’s a must-read for the kids who may also be trying to understand what it means if their friends or classmates are faced with these challenges. Told with such honesty, humor, and care, GUTS is proof that Raina Telgemeier is the queen of understanding this age group and has given us another gem to share with them.
